This is truly a trip of a lifetime! While we have been on our fair share of gorgeous island getaways, there are few scenic places that have stunned the living daylights out of us! French Polynesia is one such corner of the world!

Get ready for sights like this!

It is a breathtaking archipelago in the South Pacific, made up of 118 islands with some iconic honeymoon destinations such as Bora Bora. French Polynesia is known for its incredible turquoise lagoons, overwater bungalows, and vibrant marine life, this paradise is a dream destination for travelers seeking relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion.

The must visit islands in French Polynesia include Tahiti, home to the capital Papeete; Bora Bora, often called the “Pearl of the Pacific”; and Moorea, with its dramatic peaks and lush landscapes. The best part is that each island offers unique experiences, from diving among coral reefs to hiking through tropical rainforests. The Polynesian culture, influenced by its Ma’ohi heritage and French colonial history, is rich in music, dance, and art. Visitors can enjoy traditional feasts called “Tama’ara’a” and experience the warmth of the local people.

Since it is very expensive and hard to travel from one island to the other, the best way is to travel on a cruise ship! However we suggest choosing a small ship which offers a variety of immersive and truly experiential days out on the islands. And try to choose an itinerary that is the perfect fit for you irrespective of whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a snorkeling adventure, diving opportunities, stunning beaches, or stunning natural beauty. We chose this itinerary on PONANT’s Paul Gauguin ship for our adventure in French Polynesia and came back with memories for a lifetime. We flew from Delhi to Fiji via Sydney to board this ship, but there are plenty of options to get to Fiji. If you’re looking for dozens of unforgettable experiences packed into 1 trip, then THIS IS IT!

Firstly let’s talk about 6 places that must be on your cruise itinerary – no matter which one you choose:

1.Savusavu, Fiji

Our Paul Gauguin cruise started in Fiji. The first stop – Savusavu, located on Fiji’s Vanua Levu island, is often referred to as the country’s best-kept secret. This hidden gem is a paradise for travelers seeking tranquility, natural beauty, and a touch of adventure. Unlike the bustling resorts of Viti Levu, Savusavu has a laid-back charm, with a small-town feel and a welcoming local community. The picturesque harbor, lined with sailboats and backed by lush green hills,is the perfect way to start your idyllic cruise.

There are many excursions and day trips available in Savu Savu. But one of the highlights is its geothermal hot springs, which bubble up naturally in various locations around the town. Additionally the surrounding rainforest is home to incredible waterfalls, such as Vuadomo Falls, where you can swim in crystal-clear pools. Diving and snorkeling are also top attractions, with the reefs around Savusavu boasting an abundance of marine life, from colorful fish to manta rays.

Savusavu is also known for its pearl farms, where visitors can learn about the process of cultivating exquisite black pearls. The town’s small markets and waterfront restaurants offer fresh seafood and Fijian delicacies. Whether you’re lounging by the bay or exploring the rich underwater world, Savusavu is a tropical haven and the perfect first stop on your cruise in the area

2. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bora Bora is often considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and having visited, we can now say it is completely worth the hype. This jewel of French Polynesia is famous for its breathtaking lagoon, luxurious overwater bungalows, and dramatic Mount Otemanu, a towering volcanic peak that dominates the landscape. Surrounded by a coral reef and small motus (islets), Bora Bora offers some of the most pristine waters on the planet, making it a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

One of the most iconic activities in Bora Bora is swimming with reef sharks and stingrays in the shallow waters of the lagoon. The island also boasts world-class diving spots where divers can encounter manta rays, colorful coral gardens, and even barracudas. For those who prefer relaxation, the island’s white sandy beaches, such as Matira Beach, offer the perfect place to unwind.

Beyond its natural beauty, Bora Bora has a rich Polynesian culture. You can experience traditional dance performances, explore ancient marae (stone temples), and indulge in delicious Polynesian cuisine. Since Bora Bora is truly a dream honeymoon destination and romantic getaway, we suggest choosing a cruise itinerary that spends not 1 but 2 days in Bora Bora! This way you can explore everything the island has to offer, rent a car to drive around the island, and even spend a night at one of its iconic overwater villas.

3. Papeete, Tahiti

After a generous dose of natural beauty, it is time to experience bustling city life in Tahiti. Papeete, the vibrant capital of French Polynesia, is the gateway to the islands and a fascinating destination in its own right. Unlike the remote, tranquil atolls of the archipelago, Papeete is a lively city with a unique blend of Polynesian tradition and French influence. From its bustling markets to its waterfront promenades, the city offers travelers a chance to experience the heart of Tahitian culture.

The Marché de Papeete (Papeete Market) is a must-visit, offering everything from fragrant vanilla and black pearls to handcrafted pareos (sarongs) and fresh tropical fruits. Food lovers will enjoy the roulottes—mobile food trucks serving delicious local dishes like poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime). The waterfront area, with its yachts and cafes, provides a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.

Cultural attractions include the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, which offers insights into Polynesian history and traditions, and the beautiful Notre-Dame Cathedral, a colonial-era landmark. Papeete is also the departure point for ferries to nearby Moorea and flights to the outer islands. Whether you stay for a few hours or a few days, Papeete offers a lively contrast to the serenity of the surrounding islands.

4. Taha’a, French Polynesia

The marvels of French Polynesia just don’t stop! Taha’a, known as the “Vanilla Island,” is a hidden gem in French Polynesia that offers a more secluded and authentic experience than its famous neighbor, Bora Bora. This small island, part of the Society Islands, is renowned for its lush valleys, pristine lagoons, and fragrant vanilla plantations, which produce some of the world’s finest vanilla. A visit to Taha’a offers a chance to experience traditional Polynesian life away from large tourist crowds .

Choose a day trip to explore the island by taking a 4×4 tour through its verdant hills and vanilla farms, where you can learn about the cultivation and curing process of this fragrant spice. The island is also surrounded by a stunning lagoon, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving. Coral gardens, particularly near the islet of Taha’a, offer some of the most vibrant underwater scenery in the region.

With no major resorts, Taha’a provides a more intimate and peaceful escape – one that is easily accessible only on a cruise. Whether you’re enjoying a Tahitian feast with locals, or simply basking in the beauty of the turquoise waters, Taha’a offers a tranquil and enchanting Polynesian experience you will simply not forget

5. Moorea, French Polynesia

Moorea, often called the “Magical Island,” is one of French Polynesia’s most breathtaking destinations. Just a short ferry ride from Tahiti, this heart-shaped island is known for its lush green peaks, crystal-clear lagoons, and vibrant marine life. It’s a dream destination for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and authentic Polynesian charm.

The island’s dramatic landscapes are perfect for exploration. Hikers can trek to the famous Belvedere Lookout, which offers panoramic views of Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, framed by towering volcanic peaks. For water lovers, Moorea’s lagoon is ideal for snorkeling and diving, with colorful coral gardens, tropical fish, and even friendly stingrays and sharks. Kayaking and paddleboarding along the coast provide another way to soak in the island’s beauty.

Beyond its natural wonders, Moorea offers a rich cultural experience. Visitors can tour pineapple plantations, sample fresh tropical fruits, and enjoy traditional Polynesian cuisine, including the famous poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime). The island’s laid-back vibe and welcoming locals make it a perfect getaway for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. Whether you’re exploring lush valleys or relaxing on white sandy beaches, Moorea is an unforgettable tropical escape.

6. Motu Mahana

If you opt for the same cruise as we went on, the most unique pit stop will be a private island called Motu Mahana! Yes you heard that right! Paul Gauguin cruises own their own private island in French Polynesia and it is an idyllic escape like no other! It boasts of the bluest waters, an open-air spa overlooking the water, lots of water sports which are complimentary for all guests, a floating bar, and a Polynesian BBQ! A day at Motu Mahana is truly out of a dream!

No matter how much you research, m/s Paul Gauguin will repeatedly come up as the best choice for a cruise in the area as it is specifically designed for exploring the breathtaking islands of French Polynesia. And having spent a fortnight on it, we can see why! In addition to the incredible choice of destinations and the immersive exursions, it also allows guests to spend time in absolute luxury.

Offering an intimate and elegant experience, this 332-passenger vessel provides a perfect blend of luxury, adventure and of course, Polynesian charm. The staterooms and suites are designed for ultimate relaxation, featuring ocean views, many with private balconies. You can expect warm wood accents, luxurious mini bars, comfortable bedding, and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and spacious bathrooms. The best part is complimentary 24-hour room service which truly ensures the most comfortable voyage. If you book a suite as we did, this also includes butler service for added luxury.

The open areas onboard provide stunning views of the surrounding lagoons and islands and we spent so much time outdoors. The pool deck is perfect for sunbathing, with a refreshing pool and nearby bar. The watersports marina at the back of the ship provides complimentary equipment and allows guests to kayak, paddleboard, or snorkel directly from the ship in select ports. There is also a fitness center, spa, and entertainment lounge to ensure an amazing onboard experience.

Dining aboard m/s Paul Gauguin will tickle your tastebuds. L’Etoile offers fine dining with French-inspired cuisine, while La Veranda provides elegant meals with ocean views. Try to opt for a table by the window. For a more casual atmosphere, Le Grill serves delicious Polynesian specialties by the pool. During our 15 day voyage we noticed that every meal, even the buffets, were crafted with fresh and high-quality ingredients. This made dining onboard such a pleasurable experience.
