Slovenia is a tiny country and there are picture postcard panoramas everywhere you go. If, like us, you’re thinking of renting a car then we would suggest splitting your time a scenic apartment on the outskirts of Ljubljana and a hotel facing Lake Bled (suggestions below) and exploring the country by taking day trips in each direction – to places like Idrija, Piran,

However if you are in Ljubljana for a short city break or prefer staying at different places during the length of your road for a change in scenery, then here are some amazing hotels, B&Bs, and apartments that we discovered during the length of our stay in Slovenia. Just book the ones that tickle your fancy and suit your budget ๐Ÿ™‚

If you haven’t already, please have a look at our Slovenia road trip Itinerary (opens in a new tab)

Ljubljana

If you’re renting a car then just pick a scenic AirBnB apartment on the outskirts of Ljubljana. You can drive into the city, park, and explore it when you feel like it. There are plenty of gorgeous cottages and B&Bs available in the area – make sure you pick one that offers free parking. You can use our AirBnB link to get $20 off your first booking if you want ๐Ÿ™‚

However if you enjoy staying in the midst of hustle bustle and want to be in downtown Ljubljana, then Best Western Hotel Slon is a great option. We spent 2 nights here before we rented a car to explore Slovenia. Rooms are spacious and the breakfast buffet is great. The hotel is conveniently located and most sights are an easy 5-10 minute walk away. Shops, bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance, so it’s perfect if you are in Ljubljana for a short city break.

Glamping in Slovenia

For a truly unique accommodation experience, try a spot of glamping i.e. glamorous camping in Slovenia. Gozdne Vile Glamping Huts are one of the most fun and most affordable glamping experiences we’ve had in recent years. A large campsite right next to Lake Bled has everything from pitches to motorhomes. In one corner is a group of 8 wooden huts. This is camping with all creature comforts you could possibly want- all huts have comfortable beds, lots of storage space, power sockets, private bathrooms, and hot showers. Most huts even have a private hot tub where you can relax after a long day of exploration. Every morning, a huge breakfast hamper is left for guests outside each hut – you’ll find everything from breads and fruits to cold cuts and yogurt in there. The best part is that the huts are a 5 minute walk away from Lake Bled.

Since these huts are small, we’d suggest staying for a night or at most two nights. Try opting for the wellness package that includes little perks such as a hamper of organic chocolates and a bottle of wine on arrival, an outdoor Alpine massage, and lots of fruits at breakfast each morning.

Lake Bled

There is no dearth of accommodation at Lake Bled as it is one of the most visited sites in Slovenia (and with good reason!). We would suggest choosing a hotel that offers an incredible view of the lake because a a scenic hotel will amplify your holiday experience manifold. We really enjoyed our stay at Grand Hotel Toplice. The rooms are spacious, luxurious and well equipped, which is to be expected from a hotel that is part of the SLH collection.ย But we loved the fact that the hotel’s suites offer unparalleled views over Lake Bled – it’s safe to say we spent many hours each day fawning over its azure waters that change colour every hour. See the photos below so you know just what we’re talking about.

Try choosing the half board package so you can come back to decadent three course dinners every evening. The hotel’s restaurant also offers great views of the Bled Castle, so meals here are special. You can compare prices and book here ๐Ÿ™‚

Idrija

If you’re on your honeymoon or celebrating a special occasion in Slovenia, then we’d highly recommend checking into the stunning Relais and Chateaux property in Idrija. Hotel Kendov Dvorec is an intimate hotel with a handful of rooms. The food at the hotel is par excellence – expect local specialities tinged with characteristic Relais and Chateaux finesse. It is surrounded by orchards and offers panoramic views of Alpine scenery on one side and karst plateaux on the other. Just sitting in the garden at Kendov Dvorec and sipping on a cup of coffee is an experience in itself.

Postojna / Skocjan

Hotel Jamaย makes for the perfect base if you want to explore Postojna caves, Skocjan Caves, visit Predjama Castle, or go hiking in the area. The hotel is just 300 metres from the Postojna caves and offers comfortable and spacious rooms. The breakfast spread is huge and WiFi is great in the lobby but patchy in some rooms.

If you want to stay in the small village of Skocjan, then Pierpaolo owns a lovely home which he lets out on AirBnB. The rustic village house is traditional (and gorgeous) from the outside but fully renovated, complete with modern furnishings, on the inside. Expect some freshly-baked bread and local wine to be waiting for you when you check in. You can search the listing here.

Kamnik

The area of Kamnik is devoid of tourists and seems to have jumped straight out of a fairytale. There are tumbling waterfalls and azure springs wherever you look. If you want to spend a few peaceful days absorbing the scenery in the area, then just book a stay at Guesthouse Penzion Repnik. The small guesthouse is surrounded by Kamnik’s characteristic panoramas on all sides. Peter is a gracious host and leaves no stone unturned to ensure a great stay.
