East Mauritius harbours a little secret – The little fishing village of Trou d’ Eau Douce.  This charming village, once the bastion of Mauritian fishermen, is fast becoming a favourite with inquisitive tourists like us. It’s perfect for a bike ride if you are in the Belle Mare area.

Trou d’ Eau Douce derives its name from the merging of fresh and sea water. The chaotic cries of fishermen and the miscellany of fishing nets first attracted us to the village.

That was until we discovered Chez Tino, a little restaurant that seems to be very popular with the locals. It boasts of a great view of the turquoise waters of Trou d’ Eau Douce. Unsurprisingly, the menu is full of delectable sea-food offerings.

We tried the crab soup and sea-food salad. Both starters were as fresh as could be, complete with the lingering scent of the sea. The distinct delicious flavour of fresh crab meat coupled with the tanginess of the broth made it perfect for a hot summer’s day. A glass of  Tino’s rum punch completed the tropical experience.

Unable to stop ourselves at the huge starters (we are gluttons, what can we say 🙂 ), we ordered the Creole sea food curry and the aubergine curry – a tangy mix of flavours, they hit all the right notes. Both curries were fragrant and cooked to perfection.

We opted for their alfresco seating. Their terrace affords a gorgeous view of the turquoise waters of Trou d’ Eau Douce. The view, paired with the incomparable feeling of the warm air lapping against one’s face, guarantees a splendid dining experience.

Definitely worth a try if you are in Mauritius.
