Ever since we started writing Bruised Passports, we are asked a lot of personal questions. Our inbox is full of messages asking li’l things about us. So we thought we would take a break from ruminating about local customs and swooning over local food from some random corner of the world and address some of the most frequently asked questions by our readers.

Here’s the story of two madcaps who enjoy travelling the world, armed only with wonder in their eyes and restlessness in their souls. Hope you enjoy it 🙂

The two of us in Croatia
The two of us in Croatia – 2012

1) When did you guys meet?

Let’s get the cringe-worthy stuff out of the way first shall we?! We first met when I was an overweight and bespectacled teenager and Vid was a super geek. That was 16 years ago and we were both in high school in New Delhi *sigh*.

2) So did the sparks fly?

Errr NO. To the contrary. We were great friends right from the day we met. We saw each other through high-school crushes, random dates, and other such. We started dating each other only 4 years later 🙂

Both of us in Singapore circa 2007

3) So how and when did UK happen?

Aah this is a fun story that involves a lot of countries. Once upon a time, Vid used to live in Singapore. At the time, I used to teach English Literature at the University of Delhi and I loved my job. Vid moved to Delhi so we could be together – this lasted all of two months 😉

Shortly after Vid moved to Delhi, I got an amazing scholarship to pursue the degree of my dreams – Phd At University of Leeds. So off I went to England. Before I knew it, Vid resigned from his job in Delhi and landed at my doorstep in UK. Yipee 🙂

4) When did you guys get married?

One fine day, 10 years after we first started dating, we decided we wanted to get married. We were sure we did not want the Big Fat Indian Wedding. The traditional Indian wedding ceremony is usually romanticised in mainstream media but it has a whole host of customs and traditions steeped in patriarchy and we don’t agree with it. Never ones to follow the herd, we opted for a really simple civil ceremony in New Delhi – the kind where you go to the court in a pair of denims, you get the idea 🙂

We didn’t register for gifts for our wedding or accept gold (a staple at Indian weddings!). Of course our families couldn’t live without giving us a gift or two. Guess what we asked for? A Macbook, which we still use for blogging and a Nikon DSLR camera for our travels 🙂 These two were, without a doubt, the best gifts ever !!

No wedding is complete without a party. We followed our visit to the court with an epic party and had the time of our lives with family and friends. Our wedding card will tell you more about the nature of the party. Needless to say, the next day was spent curing mammoth hangovers 😉

5) Clearly what you do is what you love:) But when do you guys actually ‘work’? Or is this full time work for you two now? Wouldn’t it be challenging to fund all these trips? Sponsorships?

For 7 years while travelling, Vid worked as a business analyst at University College London and I worked as an English Literature academic based in London. It isn’t easy to juggle travelling and working, but the key lies in prioritising: We made a conscious decision of opting for jobs that pay less than the average corporate job but were flexible and made it easy for us to take time off work. It is just about priorities.

We have been saving our pennies to travel to different corners of the globe and travelling a lot for over 10-12 years now. Since starting Bruised Passports in 2013, we get the occasional sponsored hotel stay or holiday, but we continue to spend our own hard-earned money on travelling the world. In 2015, we quit our jobs to become full-time travel bloggers. We work as a travel photographer and travel writer duo to sustain ourselves while we are on the road. Some people like to save for houses, some like to splash on cars or jewellery, some like to party, we love travelling. It’s really as simple as that 🙂

Both of us in some corner of the world :)
Both of us on a tiny island off the coast of Africa 🙂

6) How do you get so many days off work?

The work-life balance in Europe is much better than that in Asia or America – here (in UK) everybody gets 27 days of annual leave. Add to that a handful of bank holidays (public holidays) and a generous helping of 52 weekends – that’s a whopping 140 holidays in a year. We used to make use of every one of those days to travel near or far 🙂 Things have changed now because we have the whole year to ourselves

7) You guys write so much about food. I know you love experimenting with all sorts of food when you travel. What about holiday weight?

Haha – reading this question made us giggle. Aye, we do love our food. Truth is, we eat healthy most days when we are in London (save the endless tubs of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream that are devoured over weekends, but those don’t count right? 😉 ).

We love our green smoothies and go through phases of juicing, but the only reason we don’t switch to a completely vegan or raw diet is because we firmly believe that experimenting with local food is the key to understanding a culture. It’s hard to think of Spain without jamon serrano, Brazil without steak, or Germany without bratwurst. We can’t help binging while travelling but we hit the gym with a vengeance on getting back. Want a sneak peak into our diet in London? Check out this post we published last week  🙂

What’s Italy without pasta eh?! 🙂

8) Any advice for the first time traveller?

Clichéd as it may sound, if you feel like doing something, you should. If you love travelling (or for that matter the idea of travelling), you should make every possible effort to do so. You might have to sacrifice something or make compromises to travel, but as they say, nothing in life comes free. As with any other experience, it’s best to start small – maybe a weekend trip to a nearby place or a 4 day trip to the neighbouring country. This will give you an idea of how much you enjoy travelling.

Trust us when we say this – travelling to new places and meeting people from different cultures will give you a perspective to life that no text book can. It has taught us to be ambitious, confident, patient, sensitive, and above all, well-rounded people. In the words of Prophet Mohammed: Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you have travelled. Touché !

    1. Hehe thanks Kushagr. We are not sure we look great in photos from 2007, but thanks for indulging us 🙂

  3. Eeee! Can I bookmark this post already? I thought I had my life pretty much all figured out (or at least, other people think they do, le sigh). But you two have inspired me to think about what I really want….and its very hard for someone to get into my head like that! I really love how you reply to almost every comment and for now, since I can’t travel as yet, I’m so loving this journey with you two, hugs <3

  4. Loved it. I’ve always wanted to know how you guys managed to get so many holidays.. lol. And I’ve a very similar plan. Live a very simple life and splurge on travelling!

  5. So inspiring…hats off that you have taken some tough decisions plus smart planning to do what you love 🙂
I recently got married and we too are travel buffs, just sometimes budget comes in the way 😀 But we have managed to go on 2 big trips and a few weekend trips in the past one year. Hopefully many more to come this year. Just today we were planning a trip somewhere in south east Asia after seeing the Air Asia sale…Any recommendations? Need your help 🙂

    1. Hey Soujanya,

We recently travelled to South East Asia for almost 4 weeks. We went to Malaysia, Cambodia, and Vietnam – posts will be up on the site soon but you could start looking into visiting Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Saigon, Mui Ne (fishing village south of Saigon). We had an absolute blast 🙂

Drop us an email if you have more questions. Happy travels and thanks for all the comments on all our blog!

  6. Savi-Vid…
Have been your fan for some time….have enjoyed your blogs…..but going through your Q & A’s was really
Good….knowing you was loving you……in fact I already loved you…..78,still fond of traveling….and inspired by your travels…….
    Presently,in Norwich,I would have some 4 days….make a choice for me…Amsterdum,Venice,Morocco or just Ireland …….or where…?

    1. Hey Dharma,

Thanks so much for all the love. We would say go for Venice 🙂 If you can extend your holiday to 6 days, then definitely go to Marrakech 🙂

  7. Very inspiring! It’s nice to know how you guys manage between work and travel. It’s my biggest challenge, I can never have enough holidays.

Didn’t know that Vid is a BA, I am a BA too!

    Cheers,
    Snig

    1. Hey Snig,

It’s really difficult to manage work and travel, but Vid’s job affords him a fair bit of flexibility 🙂 His job as a BA can be stressful at times (as you can imagine :)) but he gets to take time-off to relax 😉

      Cheers

  8. What a great way to get to know you guys, thanks for sharing this 🙂 It seems we share precisely the same food philosophy! I feel best when I’m drinking green juice and eating big salads but I don’t want to miss out on eating with the locals! Imagine being in Thailand and not eating the street food 😉 Thought i’d share with you this post all about finding balance in my diet in Vietnam: http://www.thisamericangirl.com/2013/11/09/how-to-eat-in-vietnam/

    1. Hehe ! Cheers to that 🙂

Loved reading your post 🙂 Green smoothie gets us going too and makes us feel less guilty about binging on all the scrumptious food on our travels 😉

Any advice for good food markets in Central London?

    1. Hey Dhruv- so good to hear from you. I’m so happy you enjoy reading our posts 🙂 Borough Market would have to be the best food market around Central London. It can get really crowded, so go early

  27. Wow..I just found your blog and have been ready it for almost an hour!! You guys are so inspiring – a beautiful, educated couple with talents for fashion, photography, and travel?!

I can’t wait to see what your year off brings!!

  28. chanced upon your website and have been reading it for so long now that my eyes hurt! Absolutely love it! To say I have a serious case of wanderlust would be an understatement. I love traveling so much that I have even trekked to the top of Acropolis in Athens when I was five months pregnant ! The first ever place I checked off in my bucket list was unesco heritage site of Hampi, Karnataka. (Btw am a bangalore girl who turns 30 this December) followed by thai street food,Malay rain forests, orchid frenzy in Singapore, alfresco dining in Paris, endless tulips in Amsterdam, lace& chocolate making town of Bruges, teal blue lakes and green valleys of Swiss alps, binging on Blackforest cake right in the Blackforest region of Germany, wandering in sun drenched poppy fields in Provence ( strangely I like that more than the lavender),soak up the the history at D-day landing beaches in Normandy and the fabulous coast of Etretat, followed by the bling in Dubai, bustling bazaars in Istanbul, breathtaking cliffs at Oia,santorini, experience yucatan culture and lip smacking food in Mexico, experience divinity everywhere in island of temples,Bali, and today I write this comment jet lagged from a trip to tropical paradise of Polynesia with my husband and two year old son Neev. You guys are fabulous, honest, unpretentious and very endearing. Keep it up!

  29. It is very heartening to see you guys travelling and sharing your experiences. It is a pity that we rarely come across Indian travellers (not tourists) when exploring the corners of this world. Blame it on our priorities or upbringing, we really do need to educate ourselves by travelling as much as we can. That’s the best education in my view 🙂 Love your blog – big thanks for the inspiration.

  30. Hi guys, such an inspirational blog and lifestyle. I’d like to know how you deal with visa issues. If I remember, you guys hold Indian passports.

My wife is Indian and I’m Pakistani but live/work in Thailand. Only way I can travel is to show proof we will return and that’s usually with employment letters, finance records, etc. Now I want to quit my job but I don’t wanna move back to Pakistan. It’s a complicated situation so I would love to know how you guys manage the visa issues and the lifestyle of digital nomads.

    thanks

    1. Hey Shayan,

We hear you! it’s really difficult, but not impossible. We managed to get visas for a lot of “difficult” countries before we quit our jobs. Once those countries run out, we’ll travel to those that allow visa free entry to Indians or have lenient visa rules for Indians. Also, we do a lot of freelance work as we travel, so that helps in showing some regular income to visa authorities 🙂

      Cheers

  31. Savi and Vid, I’m so glad i know u guys now..better late than never! I read ur blog on Bali today (someone shared it on my wall) and thats how i came to know u.And I’m going to Ubud and seminiyak for my honeymoon in feb 2016..reading your blogs inspires me..as i always wanted to travel but kept thinking about resources as an obstacle..but now i know it is not as difficult as i thought.
Thanks guys. U have another follower today onwards 🙂

    1. Hey Puja – so happy to hear that. We’ll look forward to reading your comments on our posts…….The old adage ‘When there is a will, there is a way’ holds true for travelling as well 🙂 You should just follow your heart. Have fun in Bali – I’m sure you’ll it.

  32. You guys are awesome!! Just wondering how is the lifestyle (inc travel, stay, superb fashion etc) supported? Any tips? Keep it up guys!!

    1. Thanks Vani – we used to have full time corporate jobs which helped finance our travels. We took a career break 6 months ago to travel the world and we sustain ourselves with a host of location independent jobs now. You can read more about it in the article titled ‘Our Lives Are Changing’ 🙂

  33. Savi/vid,

I am feeling so elated to drop a msg over here.. You guys are blessed with such a adrenaline rush which makes oneself to do so.all the best buddies..

  36. Hello savi & vid
So I read your story and was quite impressed .. But I would like to know how can one become a freelancer .
Well I am into photography but how to become a freelancer photgrapher & traveler .
And these days we are not getting an appealing job and we are not satisfied
So I would like to go into some thing what I love and that is photography . .
But being a girl I cannot travel all alone and my parents won’t allow me to go ..
I want to become something in my life and which will satisfy me ..
    Can you help me .

    1. Hi Bhagyashree,

With hard work and perseverance, one can definitely achieve success in the field of her choice. For starters, you should make a portfolio of your photographs and host it on a site – either a community (like 500px) or your own website. After that, you should interact and network with other people to spread the word for your work. You should also contact magazines, newspapers, and other online journals to share your work with them and get featured.

As far as travelling goes, you can join other travellers if you / your parents feel uncomfortable in your travelling alone.

      Hope this helps 🙂

      All the best!

  37. Hey Savi and Vid!

Super exciting to write to you and contacting you for the first time!

My husband and I are aspiring globetrotters and we are on our baby steps covering 10 countries over the last 2 years 🙂 In fact our last Baltic road trip – we used your itinerary as a cheat code.

We are going to celebrate our first anniversary this 14-Feb and would like to spend a week’s time somewhere in South East Asia. But, we are super stuck in choosing the right place.

Do you have any suggestions? Our criteria is as below if that helps:

Both love beaches – a resort or house that is located on a beach is our preference.
PhillipInes, Indonesia, Thailand or Cambodia are preferable.
Our budget is quite mid-level. I referred to your trip itineraries for amazing locations to stay such as the over water villa but a way above our budget.
I was looking around in booking.com and Airbnb and shortlisted couple but not our favorities I would say.

How do we go about this? The goal is to spend a very relaxed week – water, beautiful sky, good food and us! 🙂

    1. Hey Preeti,

Thanks for your message 🙂 All those places offer beautiful beaches and scrumptious food. Thailand and Philippines have some gorgeous white sandy beaches and food (Thai food is our favourite :)). You could look into Krabi. Phuket and Koh Samui have some beautiful beaches but can be crowded. Boracay in Philippines is beautiful. If you don’t mind Vietnam, you could check out Pho Quoc island.

The best place to look for a beach side villa would be Airbnb.

      Have a good trip 🙂

  38. Hi Savi n Vid!

All the best 🙂

  43. Simply wow!! I have been following you guys from an year now… I have had this desire to be able to travel throughout my life since childhood but the way our society is rooted we tend to lose hope and courage. you give me that courage nd determination everyday guys! i love you guys so much and even my boyfriend who also loves to travel follows you and takes inspiration from you!

    1. Hey Himani,

Thanks for your message 🙂 Happy to hear that you and your boyfriend enjoy reading about our experiences. You’re right – it is difficult to choose this path given how society thinks but it’s not impossible 🙂 Hope you two get to travel a lot.

      Much love
      Savi and Vid

  44. Heya my favorites ,

    #keepdoingthatgreatwork #lotsoflove

  45. Hey Vid and Savi,

I had been following you guys on insta for some time but only come to visit this site now. This site is an amazing place to visualize our dreams which we are not living(not sure if that was understandable). Thanks for that.
I had one more question, who clicks your couple pictures?

    1. Thanks a million Tanya 🙂 Usually we click all our own photos and use a tripod for the couple photos but occasionally a friend or tour guide helps us with them

  46. Hi,

Your blog is amazing. There’s not much I can say which hasn’t been said before.
I have 2 questions for you:
1)When you travel extensively there’s a lot of comparison that happens between the various places. And after visiting some fabulous places (Iceland, Croatia, South America etc. you feel some of the other places don’t live up to the hype or expectation. The order of coverage also determines if you would like a place. So how do you manage this feeling of being underwhelmed or how do you manage to not feel underwhelmed?

    2) If hands down you have to pick between your road trip of Canada, NZ and Iceland as the best one. which would you pick?

    1. Hey Akanksha,

      Thanks for your kind words.

      1) We have learnt over the years not to let the number of places we have been to affect how we will feel in the next destination. Gradually one loves that every place has something amazing to offer. For instance, whilel Bali might not be able to offer the same landscapes as Iceland, the warmth of the people and food in Bali beats everything. Just an example 🙂 You learn to appreciate the nuances of every place you visit 🙂

      2) we’d have to say Iceland out of a road trip in Canada, New Zealand, and Iceland

  47. Hi Savi and Vid,

I’m planning my honeymoon in the month of October. I have to travel to Sri Lanka from Mumbai for a wedding and would go on honeymoon after that. Can you please suggest me a budgeted place as we both are fond of travelling, exploring places and adventure sports. We are planning for at least a week long plan. Can you please suggest some places.

    Thanks,
    Priyanka Rathi

  48. Hey

I am a big fan of you guys.
I just have a small question, what about now, after so many years, are you guys still using your savings to fuel the travel or are you getting full sponsorship at hotels and the rest?

  49. Hey guys
Amazing website! Kuddos to both of you.
I have gone through your article of Lapland.

    It will be great help
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Thanks Lipika. Unfortunately we haven’t been to Norway during winter months, so we don’t have anything similar our Guide for lapland for Norway 🙂
